Episode #21: You Have Everything You Need
As I was watching the newest Star Wars movie, Rey and Luke Skywalker are talking in a cave, and Rey is worried about her plans. She tells Luke that she’s not ready, that she hasn’t prepared enough, and that she doesn’t have what she needs to defeat her grandfather. And Luke says, “You have everything you need, right now.”
We all get a little like that sometimes. We become so focused on planning, and more planning and even some more planning. We think we need to learn more, read more books, or take more courses. But we don’t.
We need to put our learning into action. We need to practice what we want to do. We forget that we’ve been learning and growing for years, and we’re ready for that idea that’s been growing in our minds.
Ask yourself:
- What is one thing that if I didn’t care what people thought, I would do?
- What is one thing that I’d really love to do right now, but haven’t had the guts to do yet?
- What is one area that I’ve really been focused on pursuing, but I haven’t really done it yet?
- What do I have all the training to do, but I just haven’t done yet?
Your brain won’t tell you things unless you’ve had the training, but we start questioning ourselves. It’s natural. So this week I want you to take an hour and ask yourself:
- What do I want to create or build with the training and skills I have acquired over the years?
- What if I took the first step forward?
- What would that look like?
Give yourself some time and space to think about what that would look like. Get quiet and still. Figure out what’s speaking to you.
Then take that first step forward.
You have everything you need right now to do whatever you want to do. How will you spend your time and money in 2020 to get you where you want to be?
Hello and welcome to episode number 21 of the Strategy Corner where our goal is to get you to take action. I’m your host, Michelle Zink, the owner of Intentional Solutions Corp. On today’s podcast, we’re going to talk about you having everything you need right now. I just saw the new Star Wars movie, The Rise of the Skywalker, with my family over the holidays. And in one of the scenes, Luke Skywalker is talking to Ray and they’re in his cave I believe or in a cave and he is saying to her that she needs to go and overtake her grandfather, the one who is causing all of the havoc. And Ray is confiding in him that she doesn’t know if she has everything, all the skills, all of the strength to take her grandfather over and Luke Skywalker in that moment says to her, you have everything you need right now.
To me that was such a great reminder because I know this, I’ve heard this before, I’ve played and tested with this over the years, but really forgot. Forgot that you have everything you need right now to overthrow your grandfather. In this case, everything to start a business. You have everything that you’ve been dreaming of like writing a book. Everything you have right now is going to be able to help you get whatever you need, but the thing is that we forget about that. We forget that we have everything right now. We forget that we’ve been taking years of learning, we’ve been growing, we’ve been creating and building our knowledge to get started. Of course, as you go along the way, you will need to learn and test new thoughts and ideas, but right now you have everything. Now, I love this because it’s so simple and true. And as soon as you start thinking about, “I have everything right now to do whatever I want to do…”, it helps you get clarity and it helps you to dream about what you do want to do.
For myself specifically, I held myself back from starting my business or even thinking about what it would look like to leave my job of 21 years because I thought I needed to know more, to learn more, to read one more book, take one more course, when the whole time I had everything I needed. And the reason why I did this was because I lost confidence in my abilities because I was reading and being passive about my learning, but I wasn’t actually taking that knowledge and utilizing it in action. I’d been planning for a long time, just like in the movie with Ray, they show her staying back at the site in the beginning of the movie to practice – to practice what she’s going to have to do when she actually faces an opponent, to practice her skills on how to beat someone in a fight.
Just like her, I’d been planning all along. I’d been reading, educating myself outside of work and areas I had interest in. I had asked questions to myself about what I needed to learn. I was open to new ideas from different people. I did the work; I trained just like Ray did, but when it was time to put these trainings into action, I didn’t do it until I did just like she did. So right now, your brain won’t be telling you to write a book if you don’t have an idea. You wouldn’t just go start a business if you didn’t have the training in a certain area to start one. I say this because a lot of times we get thoughts in our mind and then we question if it’s something we really should be doing. For example, if you asked yourself right now what’s one thing that if I didn’t care what people thought, what would I do? Or what is one thing that I really would love to do right now but haven’t had the guts to do it yet. Or what is an area that I’ve really been focusing on that I really have an interest in pursuing but I haven’t done that yet.
Now, your brain won’t be telling you to do any of these things unless you have the training. Your brain wouldn’t tell you to go and be a fighter pilot tomorrow if you didn’t have the training in order to be a fighter pilot, but for some reason we start questioning ourselves when we have these little nudges, when we have these thoughts, when we have these ideas about things we should be doing. The thing is is that we all have been training our whole life for something. We just need to decide and see what it is. What do you, right now, have all the skills, training and knowledge to do, but you haven’t because you thought you weren’t ready? I want you to take time this week and sit with yourself. Think about taking about an hour this week and ask yourself, “What do I want to create or build with the training and skills I have acquired over the years?”
“What is one thing I have been thinking about doing but haven’t had the guts to take the first step?” “What if I took the step forward on that idea or dream? What would the first step be?” That’s it. It’s just about sitting down with yourself and giving yourself some time and some space to begin to think and see what comes up. I know that the people who listen to this podcast are business owners and executives. I know you’re highly trained and I know you’re highly educated in your field. I know you have a lot of great ideas that you haven’t taken action on yet and I know that you need to take action on them. So how do we get you to start taking action? The first step is just to get quiet and still and figure out what’s been speaking to you. We’ve all had it.
We’ve had the nudges to start a business. We’ve had the nudges to write a book. I’m asking you this week to take the one action step and that is just to spend some time asking yourself some questions. What do I want to create and build with the training and skills I have acquired over the years? What is one thing I had been thinking about doing but haven’t had the guts to take the first step? What if I took the step forward on that idea and dream? What would the first step be?
I can’t wait to see what comes up for you guys because I know this is the first step in moving forward on anything that you’ve been dreaming about, but you haven’t done anything about it yet. So remember, you have everything you need right now to do whatever you want to do. How will you spend your time and your money this year in 2020 to get you to that place you want to be?
