Episode #23: What Got You Here Isn’t Going To Get You There

At this point in your business, you probably already have a website and some clients. You’re doing great, but you really have your eye on your next goal. So how do you gain additional traction and leverage to move to the next bracket in your business?

Moving from one goal post to another is very similar to losing weight. If you’re 150 pounds and you want to get to 140 pounds, you only have 10 pounds to lose. But maybe you started out at 180 pounds, and you’ve been working out and eating right and all of your hard work paid off with a 30 pound weight loss. It’s just those last ten pounds that aret so stubborn.

You’re already doing all the right things, but if you’re not moving toward your next goal, then it’s time to take stock of where you are. Sit down and start brainstorming all of the different ways you could get the needle to move. Maybe you need to eat less carbs, or maybe you need to exercise less and focus more on eating right. But in order for change to happen, you can’t keep doing the same that brought you to the 150 pound mark.

This is a lot like your business plans. You’ve built your business out; you have a new website, a great team, good clients, and you’ve hit your first goal post. To make it to your next goal post, what will you need to change? What skill do you need that you don’t currently have?

As you move between goal posts, your new normal is that you don’t know what you need to do. Go back to your 2020 goal list. What are some areas you can test or things you need to learn so that you can accomplish your goals? It’s time to stretch yourself and try new methods out so that you can move forward.

And no matter what you decide to do, remember that there is no “magic pill” you can take that can substitute for patience, hard work, and commitment.

Hello and welcome to the episode number 23 of the Strategy Corner where a goal is to get you to take action. I’m your host, Michelle Zink, the owner of Intentional Solutions Corp. On today’s episode we’re going to talk about the strategy of what got you here isn’t going to get you there. In EOS, the Entrepreneur Operating System, we talk about it a lot with businesses. What got you here isn’t going to get you there and if you think about it, what it means is if you want to grow a business from, let’s say your current sales are 1 million and you want to bring it up to 2 million, what got you to 1 million isn’t going to get you to 2 million. And that’s really easy to understand when it comes to just reading that. Well, that is true because what got me to 1 million, I had to do X certain things, right?

Maybe it was just getting out in the community and getting my name out there. Maybe it was finding one big client who opened the door to other clients. Maybe it was you had to build a website in order to grow your business to 1 million, but then when you really think about it and you think about, well what does it really mean to get me to the next level? Those things that got you to the first level truly aren’t the same things because you probably already have a website and you probably already have some good clients and so when you think about what got you here isn’t going to get you there, you need to start thinking about: well what would someone who owns a $2 million business be doing in order to gain the traction and the additional revenue that we’re looking to do? Now, the reason why I’m sharing this strategy with you is because it’s something that, again, I’ve been playing with and teaching for the last couple of years, but I feel like I have come to a true knowledge and true knowing about what this really means.

Really over the next, or excuse me over the last couple of months cause I’ve really been playing with it. And kind of digging deeper into what that really means and not only what are the things you can do to, to actually utilize this strategy but what it truly means to actually implement it, right? Because we can read a lot of things in books and we can listen to a lot of podcasts and the ideas sound amazing, but how do you actually implement it in your life? So, today on this podcast we’re going to talk about how you can actually implement it in your life. And we’re going to use a simple example of losing weight because for me that’s just something everyone can relate to. Now, I might have some men on the podcast listening who don’t have any weight issues or never had a weight issue and good for you.

But I’m just going to go ahead and share this and just use this as an example because it’s pretty easy to understand and then you can relate it to whatever is something that’s going on with you. So, when you’re talking about weight and you’re thinking about what got you here isn’t going to get you there, you need to first decide where you are. So, with anything, when you try to implement something, you need to know where you are and then where you want to go, right? And then what’s the gap in between? So, if you’re someone who, let’s say weighs 110 pounds and wants to lose, that’s not a good example. If you’re someone who weighs 150 pounds and wants they get to 140 and maybe you’re someone who actually used to weigh more than that and got down to 150. The things that you did to get down to 150 are not the things that you need to get down to 140 and the reason why is because now you’re at a situation where you’re at a different position.

You know, maybe in the beginning you just had to exercise because you didn’t exercise before. And so implementing an exercise regimen helps you drop, you know, five to 10 pounds really quickly. But now you’re exercising really well and maybe before you actually started eating really well and that helped you lose another five to 10 pounds. But now you’re really eating really well. So, now we’ve got the exercise routine in place and we’ve got the eating well in place. So, what is something else that you could do in order to get to your goal weight of 140 pounds? So, that’s something that you have to think about for everything in life. So, if you’re someone who runs a department and let’s say you want to go ahead and hire an individual to handle your HR problems. Your business has been growing and you’ve been the one who’s been handling the HR problems, but now you need someone, a professional to actually come in and be able to do that.

So, you need to know where you’re starting from. So, if I was in your shoes, I would kind of, I would list down like, okay, what are the HR issues we’ve been having? How have they been handled in the past? And then how do I want this HR person – like what for this person to walk through the door, what are some things that I want them to do? Right? Cause if I have an HR person, what is my main goal for bringing them in? Maybe it’s to decrease the amount of complaints within the organization. So, if I know right now I’ve got in a month 10 complaints and I want to bring it down to five, okay, what are some things that we could do in order to do that? Hire an HR person, number one. Number two, you know, share with them what the goals and objectives are for that department and your main pain point, which would be to bring down the number of complaints within the organization.

So again, what got you here isn’t going to get you there is a philosophy that you can utilize from a standpoint of knowing where you are and where you want to go. And then brainstorming new things that you’ve never done before that could possibly get you to where you want to go. And this is where the brainstorming is really important because you’ve never been there before. You don’t know what weighing 140 pounds looks like. You don’t know what someone who weighs 140 pounds eats. You don’t know someone who has an amazing HR professional working for them, how they handle employee complaints and how they can actually get them down. Having conversations. You don’t know any of this. So, what you’re going to do in order to get there is brainstorm and think of all the ideas, all the possibilities that can help you get to the place that you need to go.

And that’s where this comes in. What got you here isn’t going to get you there. That’s what it means. You don’t know the things. So, you have to reinvent. You need to decide ahead of time the things you’re going to try in order to get you to the next level. You don’t know what those things are because what got you here isn’t going to get you there. So, what are some new ideas? So, it’s not about thinking about, well what does that truly mean about what got me here isn’t gonna get me there? It’s really digging in and deciding what are some new things that I can try in order to get the result that I’m looking for. Over the month of December, we sat down and we did a lot of work on how we want to produce an amazing 2020. If I were you, I’d go back to that list and look at one thing that you wanted to accomplish on that list.

It could be maybe planning an amazing European vacation and what got you. You haven’t done that before because you didn’t save the money. So, how do you need to, what are some ways that you can save additional money in order to start planning your trip? Again, what got you here isn’t going to get you there. So, what are some things that you need to do now that can help you to accomplish that goal that you’ve set for yourself in 2020? And then you start doing those things. You start testing them because again, we need to start thinking about what is the person or who is the person we need to become in order to accomplish something new. And we don’t know what that is, again. And I keep on saying that cause I’m just reminding you that this is normal. We don’t know what it is because we’ve never done it before.

We’ve never been to the level that we want to go to in some in some area. It could be work. It could be a skill we want to learn. It could be weight loss, it could be a family that you want to create. It could be anything in life. And so, it takes the time and also the curiosity for you to sit down and think about and brainstorm what are some areas, what are some things you can test to get you to where you want to go. So, if you go back to that list and you look for something, it’s as simple as that. What is something that I wanted to accomplish? What are things that I haven’t done yet that could help me accomplish this? And then let’s just start playing with them and then you just start knocking down your list. You just start doing something different.

If we go back to the losing weight, like losing an extra 10 pounds, maybe it means playing with your carbohydrates and maybe you don’t eat your carbs on certain days and eat them on other days. Maybe it means that you need to increase your vegetable intake. Maybe it means you need to actually stop exercising as much and just focus on your food protocol. Writing down all these ideas and then having the patience to start trying them because I hate to tell you there’s no magic pill that you can take to get you to where you want to go. You’ve got to do the basics, which is know where you are, know where you want to go and then in the middle, brainstorm how you can get there. What are some things that you can start implementing in your life to get to where you want to go?

And then you have to have the patience, the diligence, and the commitment to do those things that you’ve written down one at a time. And then you look in, you monitor and you see if you’re getting results based off of the things that you’ve tried. So for instance, if I know that I want to lose 10 pounds and I start with one thing, so maybe the first thing on my list is I want to go ahead and cut down my workout and just focus on eating exactly what I say I’m going to eat. I would give myself a couple of weeks and try to see if I get a movement on the scale with that idea, right? So, you can’t just try something and expect to see a result tomorrow. You need to try something and then decide ahead of time how much time you’re going to give it to see if it’s actually working.

So for example, if you say you want to lose 10 pounds, I give myself two weeks to just really focus on eating well and cutting back on my exercise. And then at the end of two weeks, I get to get on the scale and see if there’s any movement, right? And then I get to decide from that point, okay, well did I lose any more weight? Did I gain weight? Then I could try the next thing. So, what I’m suggesting here and what this philosophy is all about is not a quick fix. It’s more about how we can move the needle and make permanent changes. Ones that you can actually take with you to another thing that you want to accomplish, right? Because what got you here isn’t going to get you there. You can utilize this throughout your whole life and you just start off right now with one thing so you can learn how to utilize and implement this strategy and then you move to the next thing and then he move to the next thing and then you move to the next thing. And you’ll be able to see and you’ll be able to learn what are the things that you need to do.

How long does this actually take you to implement this process? And you’ll be able to gain traction and be able to accomplish things on a quicker speed as you start taking time and learning what this process actually looks like for yourself. But in the beginning, it takes patience. You have to slow down to see what you need to do in order to speed up in the future. Okay? So, know that I’m not sharing with you, today or any day, a simple strategy that’s going to change your life tomorrow. Now, this might change your life tomorrow from a standpoint that you never thought about how you can actually start tackling the things that you’ve wanted to accomplish, but you’re not going to get to the end result by tomorrow. So, now it’s time where you have to take action. I want you to sit down and think about one thing that you would like to create in your life.

One thing that is on your goal list for 2020 and think about what got me here isn’t going to get me there. So, what are the things that I can do? What are the things I can play with to get me from here to there? Right? So, it’s again, where am I? So, in this particular goal or idea, where am I, where do I want to go? And then in the middle part there, that’s where you start brainstorming and thinking about ideas that you’re going to test. And then, you decide on one thing you’re going to play with and you’re going to decide how long you’re going to play with it. And then you’re going to see and you’re going to measure the result. And then you’re going to go to the next thing and the next thing. Until you end up getting the result that you truly want to get.

But the good thing is is that you’re in control of what you accomplish in your life. And the good thing is is that as long as you measure and you know specifically where you are, where you want to go, and what success would look like, you’ll be able to know if you get there. And this is fun because once you learn this process, you’ll be able to utilize this in all aspects of your life and with all of the things that you want to accomplish. So again, what got you here isn’t going to get you there. So, what are you willing to do different in 2020 to get to your dreams and all of the amazing things you want to accomplish in your life?
